The Louisville Boardgames Meetup Group Message Board › Railroad Tycoon (again)

edit: Didn't want to go starting a new thread, so I'll just edit this one.
I'm wanting to play one more game of RRT before GenCon rolls around in a couple weeks. Gotta get preped for that tournament! So whose interested? Preferably those who already know how to play, but if you're really anxious, we can teach. I'm not POSITIVE I can play next week, I don't know what my schedule is like yet. But I should be able to make time one night. So for those interested, what days work for you next week? I can not do Mondays. Fridays and Saturdays are a possibility, but not sure. And we're talking the week of August 5th here. old original post below: I talked a little bit about this last meetup with Drew and Jake, and they seemed interested. I just took the plunge and dropped the chunk of change required to buy Railroad Tycoon (link goes to BoardgameGeek's RRT page). This is personally my favorite board game. It's a grand strategy game, taking anywhere from 2 to 3 hours to complete. It's all about building up a steel empire during the beginnings of the rail era by buying newer trains, building track, and transporting goods. I wonder about it's viability for the Meetup, though. The board itself is about 4 feet long, dwarfing anything else I've seen so far. See: http://images.boardga... It would also mean that's the only game we play, as it would likely use the full length of time until dinner time rolls around. So I have two questions: 1) Would you be willing to learn/play at next month's (July) meetup? 2) Is there anyone interested in getting a few people together sometime to play a game or two (or any other games, even -- I'm always down for Puerto Rico, Settlers, Carcassonne, etc) outside of the meetup? I'd be willing to host. My apartment is just a few minutes away from B&N. Thanks! Edited by Brian on Jul 30, 2008 8:31 PM |

I am absolutely in with you on RRT. And I would enjoy a game on the side. I am a single dad so I have to deal with that but my boys are older so it should be okay. A weeknight would be best for me. Maybe some Tuesday?

If it's as engaging as I've heard from various sources, then I don't think the time issue would be the concern. That huge board would be, given that it would take what, 3 or 4 tables all by itself (or 6 or 8 if width is that much larger too - plus we would need space for player items like money or stock yes?).
I'm definitely up for something like this on the side. I'm a night worker, so during the day or weekend afternoon would naturally work better for me, but I usually have vacation I'm struggling to burn by the end of each year. My co-computer operator is having a back operation at the beginning of July so will be out for 6+ weeks with no replacement yet in site, so either the sooner the better or I will have to beg off until the end of August or later. (ouch!) I really like the idea of bigger longer games with a subgroup on the side. If we got enough people together regularly and aren't intending this to be an RRT-only group, I've got a Twilight Imperium 3rd ed. game that I couldn't resist buying (it's just so dang beautiful) but definitely falls outside the Meetup Group specs. I don't own it, but I would definitely ask for someone who has Avalon Hill's Dune game to bring it to one of these too. There are others that I've not bought simply because I couldn't get over the hurdle of length and needing a large enough number of like-minded players (my family is great, but there are some things that are still beyond what they are willing to attempt). I'd love for that excuse to fall away! |

I would be interested in this too and it looks like I will have plenty of free time this summer.

Well, that makes 4, which is enough to play.
Ideally, I would love to play a game next week. However, I have a feeling the place I bought it from might be a bit slow on the shipping, so it might take awhile to get here. Tuesdays MIGHT work for me, but it may be a problem. A Wednesday or a Thursday would be ideal. And after talking with Tony, it looks like about 6:30 is probably going to be the time we'll want to shoot for. Could always use more players, though. I find 5 and 6 player games to be the most fun. So please, if anyone else is interested let me know. I will be teaching everyone how to play it seems, so don't feel intimidated by that or anything. I will set up more solid plans once I actually have the game in my possession. |

I missed the meet-up in June but would be very interested in playing Railroad Tycoon. My schedule is somewhat flexible so just let me know. I will do my best to be at the July meeting anyway.

lol, ok, forget what I said about shipping being slow.
I got into work at 9:15ish today. Check my email and I have an email from the company saying they've shipped it, here's your tracking number. So I hit up FedEx, put in the number, and it says it's sitting on my doorstep as of 9:10am this morning. So the FedEx truck must have rolled up right after I left for work and dropped it off. So...who's up for a game next week? I can't commit to a Tuesday. Not yet at least. I won't know until Sunday. So would a Thursday work? Who could come to that if I had a game at 6:30? If not, let me know what days/times work best for you. |

I haven't been to the meetup in over a year (a 10-month old baby will do that), but I really like this idea. I actually have a copy of RRT (though it sounds like that's not an issue anymore!), but never get a chance to play it. I would be interested in getting together during an evening to play.
Next week is busy for me. My parents arrive Thursday night to see their grand-daughter, so that's out for me. Wednesday night could work, or Sunday evening. |

Wed. Night or Sunday evening would work for me too.

Alright, Thursday is out. Sunday is not doable for me.
So Wednesday? That seem to work for me, Thomas, and David. How about the rest of you? |
